Niger: ECOWAS extraordinary summit on Guinea Bissau opens on Friday

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - An extraordinary summit of heads of state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) opens on Friday in Niamey to discuss the political situation in Guinea Bissau, according to official sources.

The Niamey summit will try to find a solution to the political situation in Guinea-Bissau where President José Mário Vaz, in disagreement with the government led by Aristides Gomes, dismissed the latter on 28 October by decree, before appointing a new Prime Minister in the person of Faustino Fudut Imbali.

This decision was deemed illegal by sub-regional bodies, including ECOWAS.

Aristides Gomes was in charge of organizing the presidential election on November 24, hence the deep concern of ECOWAS, which has threatened to impose sanctions on all those who may obstruct the electoral process to be conducted through the ballot box to choose a new president to head this West African country.

ECOWAS had also sent a delegation on Sunday to Bissau, which issued an ultimatum to the Faustino Imbali government, giving it 48 hours to resign before the Niamey summit, failing which it will come under heavy sanctions.
