Morocco reaffirms support for new Libyan authorities

Rabat, Morocco (PANA) – The Moroccan minister of Communication, Khalid Naciri, on Wednesday reaffirmed his country’s support for the new Libyan authorities and the commitment to give them the assistance they need to strengthen during the process of change.

"The global approach initiated by the new Libyan authorities is marked by a high spirit of responsibility...," Mr Naciri, who is also the spokesperson for the government, said in a press briefing at the close of a cabinet meeting in Rabat.

“Undisputably, the Maghreb space, which is going through a geo-political process, is being completely transformed," he said.

Libya and Morocco are members of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), a regional organization which also includes Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania.

However, that North African aspect is lagging behind because of the crisis between Morocco and Algeria about the Western Sahara. Rabat reproaches Algiers for accommodating and backing activists of the Polisario Front which has declared the independence of the territory.

Mr Naciri said “it is obvious that a certain number of countries from Northern Mediterranean, including France, which were at the forefront of the change process in Libya, will find themselves in a new geo-political positioning".

Morocco has officially recognized the Libyan National Transitional Council as the only representative of the Libyan people.
