Morocco elected to AU Peace and Security Council for two-year term

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) – Morocco was elected on Wednesday for a two-year term to the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) following a first-round vote held during the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa.

According to a statement issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, the Kingdom secured more than two-thirds of the votes, obtaining a total of 34 votes.

Since rejoining the African Union in 2017, Morocco has twice served on the Council, holding a two-year mandate from 2018 to 2020 and a three-year term from 2022 to 2025.

During its previous mandates, Morocco contributed to strengthening the Council’s working methods and promoting best practices through a responsible and inclusive approach in collaboration with other member States.

The country also promoted the “peace-security-development” nexus, presided over the Council on several occasions, and supported initiatives aimed at strengthening African stability, including capacity-building programmes and election observation missions.

Among its contributions was the launch of the Tangier Declaration.

The Peace and Security Council serves as the African Union’s standing decision-making organ responsible for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts on the continent.

Morocco is represented at the ongoing Executive Council session by a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

The meeting precedes the 39th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for 14–15 February.
