Morocco 'deeply worried' over its exclusion at the Berlin conference on Libya

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – Morocco on Saturday expressed deep concern about its exclusion from Sunday’s Berlin conference on the Libyan crisis, according to a statement issued by the Moroccan ministry of foreign affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad.

"Morocco is still at the forefront of international efforts for the achievement of a solution to the Libyan crisis," said the communiqué.

It pointed out that Rabat "played a key role in the conclusion of the Skhirat deals that are so far the only political framework backed by the UN Security Council and accepted by all the Libyan protagonists for the resolution of the crisis in that fellow Maghreb country”.

"Morocco understands neither the criteria nor the motivations of the choice of countries participating in the conference," said the communiqué.

It said "the host country of that meeting (Germany), which is far from the region and the complexities of the Libyan crisis, cannot transform it into the promotion of its national interests".

"As for Morocco, it will continue its commitment to our Libyan brothers and countries sincerely interested and concerned, in bid to contribute to a solution to the Libyan crisis," concluded the communiqué.

Countries and international organisations invited in the conference are Algeria, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Britain, France, China, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey, Congo, the European Union, the African Union and the Arab League.

Invitations were also sent to the head of the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Sarraj and Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Several dossiers are on the agenda of the conference: the consolidation of the precarious ceasefire that came into force on 12 January on the joint initiative of the Russian and Turkish presidents, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, respect of the arms embargo and need to find a political solution.
