Morocco deeply concerned with military escalation in Libya

Rabat, Morocco (PANA) - Morocco Tuesday expressed deep concern with the ongoing military escalation in Libya and rejected any foreign interference, including military intervention in the Libyan affair, an official source told PANA here.

This sentiment was expressed by the Moroccan minister of foreign affairs, African cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of an inauguration ceremony of the general consulate of The Gambia in the southern region of Dakhla.

The foreign interventions have not but complicated further the Libyan situation, compromised the perspectives for political solution in the country, anchored the internal conflicts and threatened peace and security in the region of Maghreb in its entirety, said Bourita at a joint news briefing with his Gambian counterpart, Mamadou Tangara.

"There is no military solution to the Libyan conflict," he said, before adding that "the resolution of the conflict cannot be but political and consists in a consensus between the different Libyan groups within the framework of the supreme interest of Libya and the Libyan people".

In that respect, Bourita said the political solution passed through a transitional stage according to the dispositions of the Skhirat political deal through the consolidation of that agreement and its improvement, if necessary.

The head of the Moroccan diplomacy said Libya could not be transformed into political ‘business’ for the diplomatic conferences and meetings, rather than serving the vital needs of the Libyan people in terms of peace and security.

The responsibility of the international community, he said, “consist in accompanying Libya in the process of a political deal and getting it far from the negotiations of foreign agendas which do not take into consideration the supreme interest of the Libyan people”.

“Morocco, once again, calls for a positive evaluation, restraint and the respect of Libya’s territorial integrity and the interest of the Libyan people,” he concluded.
