More than 600 minors became mothers in northwestern Bénin in first half of year

Cotonou, Bénin (PANA) - A total of 655 minors became mothers from January to June in the department of Donga, northwestern Benin, alerted here Tuesday a dispatch from Agence Bénin Presse, the state-run news agency.

Quoting Alassane Sabi Karim, head of the department for the promotion of gender, family and child in Donga, the ABP revealed that "a total of 655 minors gave birth in Donga from January to June 2020", out of a total of 14,359 births of all categories registered in the department during the semester.

In 2019, it is recalled, 759 minors gave birth out of a total of 10,933 births registered in the department.

The commune of Djougou, the department's capital city, was the first with 503 cases of under-age mothers, followed by Bassila with 104 cases, and Ouaké (a commune bordering Togo) with 31 cases and Copargo with 17 cases of under-age births.

At the departmental level, there are 70 student mothers, compared to 166 in 2019, and 211 apprentice artisans, compared to 342 in 2019.
