MINUSMA funds market gardening project for women in Timbuktu region of Mali

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The United Nations Multidimensional Mission for the Stabilization of Mali (MINUSMA) has funded, for an amount of CFAF 51 million or, a 3-hectare market garden for a group of 150 women from rural communes in the Goudam circle of Timbuktu region of north-east Mali, PANA learned from the Mission.

The Euros 77,743 support from the UN Mission to Nialy Women's Association, was part of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Programme, included in the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali. It aims to improve the living conditions of women who are benefiting by producing fresh or dried vegetables that provide income and contribute to social cohesion, said the MINUSMA.

The Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali was signed in May-June 2015 between the Malian government, armed groups in North Mali and the international community with a view to achieving final peace in this country, which has experienced a series of rebellions in its northern part.

The new market garden has a 15 cubic metre capacity water tower operated by solar panels, fountains, water basins and a fence.

Ms. Aissa Allaye Touré, president of the association, expressed the Group's gratitude to MINUSMA and its partners, and requested "an additional effort to build a storage and make agricultural inputs, seeds and fertilizers available to them".

MINUSMA, besides its mission to provide security in northern and central Mali, supports, through its achievements, the Malian Government in its fight against poverty and, above all, food insecurity in these parts of the country, which are plagued by jihadist attacks and inter-community conflicts that are prejudicial to their socioeconomic development.
