Medical emergency of pregnant women forces Kenya Airways to make emergency landing in Kigali

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - A Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Bamako, Mali, has made an emergency landing in Kigali after a heavily pregnant passenger requested medical emergency, a senior manager of the airline told reporters on Wednesday in Kigali.

It said a passenger, who is a doctor, helped the woman through her contraction before the pilot declared an emergency and requested clearance to divert to Kigali where the woman was rushed to a nearby military hospital.

Kenya Airways' flying policy says pregnant women flying after 28 weeks of pregnancy require a medical certificate signed by a qualified doctor stating the estimated date of the baby's birth.

It said that the certificate also needs to confirm that the woman is in "good health" and has no reason that would prevent her from flying.

The plan is for the flight to continue its journey to Bamako, the airline said.
