Mauritius launches Safe City project

Ebene, Mauritius (PANA) – Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth on Monday launched the command centre of the Safe City Project meant to ensure the safety and security of the local population as well as tourists and other visitors.

“The Safe City project is now a reality and will be fully operational by the end of December 2019,” said Mr. Jugnauth.

“The Safe City project integrates surveillance cameras, 1,542 Intelligent Video Surveillance System (IVS) - a smart camera for capturing good definition images within a 200-metre radius of people in motion – and, 142 Intelligence Traffic Surveillance System (ITS), which has the ability to enter the licence plate number of vehicles travelling on highways in several regions of Mauritius.”

The Safe City project is based on six main pillars, the ITS being one of them.

According to the Prime Minister, the Command Centre will play a crucial role in the fight against crimes through its advanced, integrated state-of-the-art technological solutions, together with a coordinated approach with police officers on the ground.

“Efficient and effective policing will act as a deterrent in the prevention of crime and facilitate decision-making,” he said.

Also, Mr Jugnauth highlighted the use of real time information to enable the prevention as well as proper handling of various emergencies, accidents and disasters by detection, monitoring, warning, and emergency treatment.

“This will ensure that the society remains safe and secure with the integration of emergency services, fire services and public health agencies,” he added.
