Mauritius: Mauritius to participate in Francophonie Summit in Senegal

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - A high-level delegation from Mauritius, led by President Rajkeswur Purryag, will participate in the 15th Francophonie Summit, scheduled for 29-30 November, 2014, in Dakar, Senegal, PANA learnt Tuesday from official sources.

The Mauritian delegation also comprises of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Rashid Beebeejaun and the former deputy secretary general of the African Union Organisation, Vijay Singh Makhan.

During the Summit, Heads of State and Government of Member States will be called upon to choose the successor to Abdou Diouf, former President of Senegal, and current secretary general of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (IOF).

Mauritius will support the candidature of Jean-Claude de l’Estrac to this post.

PANA reports that the IOF, created in 1970, represents one of the biggest linguistic zones in the world. Its members share more than just a common language. They also share the humanist values promoted by the French language.

Its mission is to embody the active solidarity between its 77 Member States and Governments (57 members and 20 observers), which together represent over one-third of the United Nations’ member states and account for a population of over 890 million people, including 220 million French speakers.
