Mauritius: Mauritian PM appeals for clean energy

Bambous, Mauritius (PANA) - Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, pleaded Wednesday in favour of clean energy, saying the island should stop being dependent on fossil fuel.

Speaking at the inauguration of a solar farm at Bambous, on the western coast of the island, the Prime Minister hoped that by the year 2025, Mauritius would be able to produce 35 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable sources.

He announced the setting up of two wind farms in the near future in the island.

“This solar farm is in line with the philosophy of the Maurice Ile Durable concept. It proposes clean energy and at the same time reduces the emission of carbon through the burning of alternative fossil fuel to the atmosphere," Ramgoolam said.

PANA reports that the Bambous Solar Farm of a production capacity of 15MW with its 62,000 modules of photo-voltaic solar panels that have been installed, will supply electricity to the national grid.

Available official statistics indicate that imported fuels, comprising petroleum products and coal, accounted for 84.8 per cent of the total primary energy requirement in 2012 in Mauritius while locally-available sources, made up of bagasse, hydro, wind, landfill gas, photovoltaic and fuel-wood supplied the remaining 15.2 per cent.
