Mauritanian newspapers highlight rise in COVID-19 figures

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - The Mauritania newspapers this week focused on the exponential rise in coronavirus cases in the country.

They reported that figures of infections and deaths increased seven fold between October and November.

Essahraa newspaper reported a statement from the Ministry of the Interior calling on the public to beware of the gravity of the pandemic and the risks of its spread. They also asked the public "to act with seriousness, responsibility and maximum caution in the face of the scourge".

The ministry announced new measures and mobilization necessary to fight against the pandemic.

For its part, Le Calame reported "a second wave of COVID-19" and questions the reasons behind such an epidemiological evolution.

Pointing the finger at Mauritanians, it noted, with bitterness, that "many of us had naively believed that the disease was behind us".

It said there was laxity on the part of the population who had been told "over and over again that we should learn to live with the virus, but we hastened to let go too soon".

In the same vein, Sahara Médias announced the beginning of a campaign for the application of preventive measures against COVID-19.
