Mauritanian government approves association deal with ECOWAS

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The Mauritanian government has adopted the bill authorizing the ratification of the association agreement signed with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on 5 May, 2017, in Nouakchott.

This indication was given on Friday at the weekly council of ministers meeting.

The association agreement aims to enable ‘’the free movement of people and goods, the harmonization of customs procedures, investment freedom, among others."

The agreement is expected to give new bite to the Mauritanian economy, thanks to an ECOWAS market, strong with a figure of 360 million users with a cumulative Gross Domestic Product (GDP), estimated at 800 billion US dollars’’.

ECOWAS is a regional block established in 1975 and bringing together 15 states.

However, Nouakchott withdrew from the organisation in 2000 ‘’to devote attention to the unity of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU)’’, which brings together Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia, according to the official sources.
