Mauritania's new president to attend G5 Sahel, ECOWAS meetings in Ouagadougou

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - Mauritania's new head of state, Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, will take part in the G5 Sahel and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meetings in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, on Friday and Saturday.

This will be his first trip abroad since his election on 22 June and his inauguration on 1 August.

The G5 Sahel countries are composed of Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad and this sub-regional organization is dedicated to the fight against terrorism and the pooling of development efforts.

The Ouagadougou Summit comes amid a multiplication of terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso.

The organisation of the G5 Sahel and ECOWAS meetings in the same city, a few hours apart, stems from a new vision of collective security, through which France and its Western partners would like to involve the countries in the Gulf of Guinean, which are increasingly exposed to counter-terrorism actions, in a formula that should be defined during the meeting.
