Mauritania’s Senate president dies in France

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The chairman of the Mauritanian Senate and a former interim president, Bâ Mamadou, alias M’Baré, died on Friday morning in Paris after a long illness, official sources told PANA in Nouakchott.

The government has declared three days of national mourning during which flags will fly half-mast.

Mr M’Baré, 64, from Maghama, in the south of the country, was elected chairman of the Senate in 2007.

He was interim of president of the Republic from April to July 2009 under the framework of the settlement of the constitutional and political crisis arising from the 6 August 2008 coup that overthrew the regime of Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
