Mauritania authorities step up investigations into former president Abdel Azizi's tenure

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - Mauritanian anti-corruption police are continuing their investigations into governance during the decade of the rule of former President Mohamed ould Abdel Aziz (2008/2019), the local media reported on Friday.

The reports said searches were carried out on farms and other private properties of the former president in the localities of Benichaab in the north, Rosso in the south and Nouadhibou in  the extreme north-west.

They said Mohamed ould M'Sabou, a son-in-law of the former president, accompanied police during the search at Benichaab.

The mission in Nouadhibou involved investigations into companies working in the fishing sector based on a report of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CEP), which was sent to the judiciary on 5 August.

The report covers the award of 109 contracts in the areas of energy, infrastructure, management of the National Hydrocarbon Revenue Fund (FNRH), management of the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM), a port concession, a fishing contract, land in Nouakchott and the liquidation of public enterprises.

There are more than 300 personalities close to the former president, two former Prime Ministers and former members of the government involved.

The former president was placed in custody from 17 to 24 August during which he refused to talk because he claimed immunity for actions in the exercise of his duties as president.
