Mauritania: Sixth summit of G5 Sahel heads of state on 25 February

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - The sixth ordinary summit of G5 Sahel heads of state will be held on 25 February, the organization, whose permanent secretariat is seated here, announced Wednesday.

The meeting of heads of state will be preceded by the 7th session of the council of ministers.

Topping the agenda of the next meeting of the leaders are “the evaluation of the progress made within the framework of the operationalization of the joint G5 Sahel force and the adoption of the communication strategy” of the regional organization, in a context of recurrence of terrorist attacks attributed to Jihadist armed groups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in particular.

The joint force includes 5,000 men from the armies of member-countries.

G5 Sahel is a sub-regional organization set up in December 2014, with Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad as member-countries.

Its objective is “to coordinate and take joint actions in the domain of development and security” in a large zone of five million square kilometers, with geographic deserted and semi-deserted conditions, with a population of more than 65 million inhabitants.
