Manhunt for motorist who killed ducklings in South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – A manhunt is underway for a Cape Town motorist who sparked a national outcry by driving over two ducklings in the city centre on Friday.

Several people who witnessed the incident said the driver deliberately drove over the Egyptian Geese ducklings which were crossing a busy street in broad daylight.

The incident was also captured by surveillance cameras which have identified the vehicle and registration number.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has opened a case and said the suspect faces severe punishment.

In terms of South Africa's Animals Protection Act, the accused could be facing imprisonment of up to 15 years or a fine of up to US$20,000.

“We are in the process of tracing the owner of the vehicle based on the car’s licence plates and we also dispatched representatives to the site to attempt to retrieve the remains for post mortem purposes,” the SPCA said in a statement received by PANA.

It has called for any other witnesses who saw this “heinous display of disregard for and cruelty towards animals” to contact its offices.
