Mali to launch Joint Monitoring Mechanism for political transition

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Joint Monitoring Mechanism of the Transition timetable to constitutional rule in Mali will be launched on Thursday in Bamako.

The Mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Mali and former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, who arrived in Bamako on Wednesday, will attend the launch.

He has already had a briefing with the local monitoring committee of the transition and met the diplomatic corps.

After the official launch, former President Jonathan will participate in the meeting of the Consultation Framework between the government and political parties and again meet the local monitoring committee of the Transition. On Friday, he will meet the President of the Transition, Colonel Assimi Goita.

The visit of the former Nigerian president comes at a time when Mali has made significant progress in the transition process and a return to constitutional order.

Leaders of ECOWAS and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU)  on 3 July lifted crippling economic and financial sanctions imposed on Mali in January.

Mali has adopted a new electoral law, which was passed by the National Transitional Council (CNT, the legislative body, on 17 June and promulgated by the head of state on 24 June.

On 4 July, the President of the Transition, Colonel Assimi Goïta, signed a decree setting the duration of the Transition at 24 months from 26 March 2022.
