Mali military junta visits ailing ousted President Kéita

Bamako, Mali ( PANA) - A high-powered delegation of Mali's military junta, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), led by its chairman, Colonel Assimi Goita, on Thursday visited ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Kéita, who had been admitted at a clinic in the capital, Bamako.

The former president was admitted to the clinic on Tuesday after suffering a mild stroke, according to doctors.

Reliable sources said his state of health had improved and he returned on Thursday to his home in Sebénikoro, western district of the Malian capital. He may travel abroad in the coming days for further treatment.

The sources said Kéita was very pleased with the visit of the delegation.

He was arrested on 18 August by a group of officers of the CNSP, who forced him to resign. He was allowed to return home a few days later.

Since June 2020, Mali had been experiencing an unprecedented socio-political crisis, marked by demonstrations organised by the Movement of 5 June-Patriotic Forces Rally(M5-RFP), which called for the resignation of President Kéita and his regime.

The demonstrators accused the government of poor governance and mismanagement of the multifaceted crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2012.

Upon taking power, the junta explained that it was only completing the mission that the M5-RFP had set itself: the resignation of President Keita.
