MONUSCO chief attends 2020 Fragility forum in Washington

Kinshasa, DR Congo (PANA) - The special representative of the UN Secretary General in DR Congo, Leila Zerrougui, Tuesday left Kinshasa for Washington to participate in the 2020 Forum on Fragility, the spokesperson for the UN Mission for DR Congo stabilization (MONUSCO), Matthias Gillmann, said here Wednesday.

“The forum brought together government delegates, international institutions, the private sector, civil society, university professors and the media, as well as donors, to improve the efficiency of development approaches in contexts of fragility, conflicts and violence,” he said.

During the third edition of the forum held by the World Bank, the special representative will make speeches in several sessions within the framework of her job of plea for the support for initiatives of stabilization and strengthening of the government sovereign duties to the police, army, justice, particularly in post-conflict zones in DR Congo.  

She will plead for sustained support for the development and opening-up initiatives, particularly in the Kasaï, in relation to her visit to Kananga and Tshikapa.

In Washington, Zerrougui will also meet with the representatives of the US government.

She will visit the UN seat in New York for public and technical meetings with DR Congo’s partners, including members of the UN Security Council. 

After the visit, the special representative will travel to the German capital, Berlin, to join other senior officials of the peacekeeping mission for a meeting on actions for peacekeeping.

The initiative brings together member-states, the Security Council, host countries, countries providing contingents or police staffs, regional partners and financial contributors to renew their collective commitment for peacekeeping activities carried out by the United Nations.  

Zerrougui will also meet with members of the German government.
