Lomé hosts terrorist simulation exercises

Lomé, Togo (PANA)  -  Several elite corps of the Togolese defence and security forces took part in a simulation of terrorist attacks here Thursday, security sources told PANA here.

The sources said that “the operation consists in a simulation on a response to a terrorist attack. Heavily armed soldiers have therefore used light ammunition within the framework of the operation”.

The exercise, carried out in the administrative district of the Togolese capital, raised fears among neighbouring populations.

Through that exercise, Togo and neighbouring Burkina Faso, where attacks have become recurrent, aims to “re-evaluate the response capacities of the defence and security forces to any possibility of terrorist attack on the Togolese soil”.

It comes within the framework of the agenda of “continuous training for the specialised specific interventions” of the Togolese army.

In the past, the country carried out those types of exercise at Lomé airport, as well as in several hotels and in the port zone, in southeast Lomé, to strengthen the army.

The country, facing the recurrence of Jihadist attacks in the sub-region, in addition to those exercises, has taken security measures and tightened its judicial arsenal to counter them.
