Libyan society preserves women's dignity and protects their rights, according to a Libyan Parliament official

Benghazi, Libya (PANA) - The Deputy Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Rasmi Balrouin, has affirmed that violence against women, in all its forms, is rejected in Libya and criminalised by law, emphasising that Libyan society preserves the dignity of women and protects their rights, and that the images or practices prevalent in other societies do not apply to the reality of women in Libya.

This statement was made during his speech via videoconference at the Sixth Roundtable of Experts on common principles to support parliaments organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on the theme: ‘'Promoting Parliamentary Development Through Gender Equality’' aimed at reviewing progress made and obstacles encountered in promoting gender equality in parliaments.

Mr. Balrouin explained that Libyan women enjoy the same professional and labour rights as men, including in terms of benefits and financial rights.

He noted their significant presence in various sectors and their active participation in representing the Libyan state in numerous international forums.

The Deputy Speaker of the Libyan Parliament added that the slogan ‘‘Women Represent Half of Society’’ is a concrete reality in Libya, not just a slogan, stressing the need to take into account the cultures and beliefs of different peoples when discussing women's issues at international forums, and to promote values that respect human dignity and guarantee a dignified life for both men and women without excess or neglect.

Mr. Balrouin pointed out that the presence of Libyan women in political, ministerial, academic and administrative leadership positions was evident, documented and undeniable, assuring that this reflects their true status and active role within various state institutions.

It should be noted that the Common Principles for Supporting Parliaments constitute a fundamental framework guiding international efforts to develop parliaments and improve their functioning around the world, in particular by supporting women's participation and ensuring their presence in decision-making positions.
