Libyan Interior minister reviews efforts to establish regular security units
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libyan Interior minister of the Government of National Accord, Fathi Bachagha, presented during his meeting with the Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Libya, Joshua Harris, an overview on "efforts to reduce the role of armed groups in the formation of legitimate security forces in the service of the Libyan people".
Bachagha denounced the chaos of the militias in Tripoli, promising to fight them for the enforcement of the rule of law in Libya.
The meeting, which took place in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, took place in the presence of National Security Advisor of the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Tajeddine al-Rezzagui, said a statement from the Interior ministry on Wednesday.
For his part, Harris assured "the support of the United States for Libyan efforts to achieve a permanent cease-fire and for the meeting to find a peaceful dialogue for the crisis in Libya.
He stressed that "the embassy will work with the ministry to ensure the full implementation of Executive Order 13726 issued by the United States, which authorizes the imposition of sanctions against individuals who threaten peace, security and stability in Libya.
Earlier on Wednesday, the U.S. embassy announced that "it will work with Bachagha to impose sanctions on individuals who threaten peace, security and stability in Libya," according to a tweet.
In addition, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs R. Clarke Cooper and Ambassador Richard Norland discussed "the deep concern over foreign interference in Libya prior to the visit of Cooper to the Djerba air show in Tunisia," the U.S. embassy in Libya tweeted.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has castigated Russian interference in Libya, saying it undermines Libyan interests, referring to Wagner Group mercenaries fighting alongside Marshal Khalifa Haftar in his war against Tripoli. Moscow has always denied any involvement in sending mercenaries.
