Libyan Interior minister reaffirms rejection of Haftar’s government militarization project

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The minister of Interior of the government of national accord (GNA), Fathi Bachagha, Monday reaffirmed he backed any project aimed at restoring stability and peace in Libya, an official source said here.

He therefore rejected Khalifa Haftar’s “military project aiming at a militarization of the government”.

Bachagha said this at a joint news conference in the Turkish capital, Ankara, with the Turkish minister of Defence, Hulusi Akar, and Maltese ministry of Interior Byron Camilleri.

He said "the tripartite meeting discussed the strengthening of the joint cooperation between Libya, Turkey and Malta in the fight against illegal migration and organised crime”.

It also discussed "the fight against terrorism and the promotion of Libyan executives as well as to strengthen stability in the Mediterranean basin".

A statement issued by the Libyan ministry of Interior said the meeting dealt with stability in Libya and measures by the legitimate government to strengthen efforts at maintaining security and stability in the country.

"We pray for dialogue between Libyans and we reject Haftar’s military project," Bachagha said, adding that "Haftar and his militias carried out military operations that led to the massacres and displacement of several citizens, which provoked the destabilization of the security inside the country".

The Libyan minister of Interior said that "such actions are also assumed by the countries backing Haftar", calling on them "to stop backing this failed project that caused martyrs and destruction".

He underlined: "we are for any project that restores life, stability and peace, and will launch the revival of the economy and trade for Libya".

The tripartite meeting was preceded by two bilateral meetings by Bachagha with Akar and Camillari.

The ministry of Interior of the GNA said the meeting discussed the joint cooperation agreements between the two countries and examined the situation in Libya and a certain number of issues of common interest.
