Libyan PM orders urgent needs of western town of Tarhouna to be met

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan Prime Minister, Abdelhamid Al-Dbaiba, has given instructions for the formation of a ministerial committee to meet the urgent needs of the population of Tarhouna, 80 km west of Tripoli, where dozens of mass graves have been discovered.

This was announced during a visit of Mr. Al-Dbaiba to Tarhouna on Saturday.

The town was the last stronghold of the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar who launched a bloody attack in April 2019 to capture Tripoli. The Tripoli War ended in early June 2020 when Haftar's forces were finally repelled with the help of Turkey.

Since then, dozens of mass graves containing hundreds of bodies have been discovered, illustrating the extent of the violence perpetrated by the Al-Kaniet militias that controlled the town at the time.

Mr. Al-Dbaiba, accompanied by a ministerial delegation, visited Tarhouna to examine the situation in the city, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior.

The committee will be chaired by Interior Minister Khaled Mazen, with the minister of Local Government, Badreddine Al-Sadidik Al-Toumi, Minister of Justice, Halima Ibrahim Abderrahman, and Minister of Social Affairs, Wafa Aboubaker Al-Kilani, as members. The Prosecutor General's Office will also be on the committee.

Mr. Mazen said that the Ministry of Interior has taken all legal measures regarding reports of missing persons and the location of possible victims, and pledged to intensify the efforts of the security services to speed up the work of identifying the missing  persons and to open up other sites that are believed to contain mass graves.

The minister also pledged to prosecute those involved in the mass graves and other criminal offences in the country and abroad, against whom arrest warrants have been issued by the public prosecutor.

He said the ministry is activating and organising the work of security and services to ensure security in the town, according to the statement.
