Libyan PM discusses border security and counter-terrorism in Libya and Africa with AFRICOM chief

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity and Minister of Defence, Abdulhamid al Dbaiba, discussed border security and counter-terrorism issues with the Commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Michael Langley, who arrived in Tripoli on Wednesday.

They also discussed political and security developments in neighbouring African countries a.nd their impact on security and stability.

During their meeting in Tripoli in the presence of the US Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, and the Libyan Chief of General Staff, Major General Mohamed Al-Haddad, Mr. al Dbaiba and Major General Mohamed Al-Haddad discussed the political and security situation in neighbouring African countries and its repercussions on security and stability.

Mr. al Dbaiba and Gen. Langley focused on the repercussions of the situation in Derna affected by storm Daniel, and on the organization of the American support mechanism for the affected areas in the east of the country through the government of national unity, its executive bodies and its field teams in the eastern region.

The Prime Minister, who is also Minister of Defence, stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation with the US government and its organizations present in Libya to remedy the damage caused to the populations of the affected areas and to contribute to the return of development and stability in the region.

On Monday evening, US President Joe Biden announced an additional $11 million in humanitarian aid for Libya following the floods that swept through the eastern regions of the country last week, causing huge losses of life and property, according to a statement issued by the White House.

"Today, as the people of eastern Libya continue to recover and rebuild from catastrophic flooding, the United States will provide an additional $11 million to local and international organizations in response to their urgent humanitarian needs," the statement quoted Biden as saying.
