Libyan Media Authority and HNEC sign MOU on election awareness, coverage

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya's High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) and the Libyan Media Authority Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for media cooperation and support as part of efforts to raise levels of political and electoral awareness in Libya, an official source said here.

The memorandum was initialled by the chairman of the High Electoral Commission, Imed Al-Sayeh, and the chairman of the Libyan Media Authority, Mohamed Baiyou, at the HNEC headquarters here.

He ceremony was witnessed by the Libyan News Agency (LANA) Director-General Abdelbasset Aboudia; Deputy Director-General, Loubna Younis; and a number of journalists and media professionals from various media institutions in the country.

The document stipulates that the Electoral Commission provides all information, data, news and various media materials related to the electoral process that it deems important to communicate to the national and foreign public opinion through the media under the Libyan Media Authority.

The memorandum also stipulates that the Libyan Media Authority will provide technical advice to support media events organized by the Electoral Commission and to cover events related to the electoral process throughout the country.

The agreement provides for cooperation between the two parties to implement what is included in the electoral laws and regulations related to the electoral campaign for candidates.

It also covers the implementation of conferences, workshops and meetings that are proposed and approved, the exchange of information and databases related to media monitoring of interest to both parties, and the invitation of both parties to each other to participate in meetings and conferences held by each of them.

The MOU also provides that the two parties shall hold periodic biannual meetings attended by representatives of both institutions to develop appropriate mechanisms to implement the objectives and activities mentioned in the document.

The parties shall also monitor progress in the areas of cooperation and targeted activities, review the difficulties and challenges faced by both parties in this Memorandum and discuss ways to resolve them.

It should be noted that Libya is scheduled to hold general elections on 24 December, 2021, a date set by the participants in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum under the auspices of the United Nations.
