Libyan Govt assesses security situation in Tripoli after escalating violence

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, held talks with the Interior Minister Fathi Bachagha on Wednesday on the security situation in Tripoli and its surroundings as well as in neighbouring towns.

The talks also hears efforts and programmess of the Ministry of the Interior to strengthen security.

The meeting held at the presidential headquarters in the capital, Tripoli, discussed "coordination mechanisms with the forces in light of the 'state of alert' proclaimed in several cities to respond to the aggression", according to a press release from the Communication and Information Office of the GNA.

The meeting discussed "the measures taken to ensure the security of citizens and stressed the need to confront outlaws with force and determination", the statement added.

Armed clashes since 4 April between the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar and troops loyal to the GNA intensified after Haftar's call last Thursday to march towards the heart of Tripoli.

This escalation comes at a time when preparations are continuing for the holding of the Berlin International Conference on Libya, scheduled for next January and intended to achieve a cease-fire, thanks to the participation of the major powers of the UN Security, Council and relaunch the political process as a prelude to an agreement between Libyans.
