Libyan, French interior ministers agree to train elite Libyan police force

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan and French and French Interior ministers have agreed to form an elite Libyan police force, in coordination with the special forces of the French police.

This follows a meeting on Thursday in Paris between the Interior Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bachagha, and his French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin.

Bachagha in a tweet described the talks as "positive" saying "we have focused on strengthening security cooperation between our two countries, especially in the areas of training and border and coastal security".

"We have agreed to train a Libyan elite police force, in coordination with the special forces of the French police, and to train other elements in the field of detecting the forgery of identity documents. We have also agreed to cooperate in the field of combating illegal immigration and coastal security, providing each other with the necessary technology and equipment for this purpose," he added.

Mr. Bachagha also met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, with whom he discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, achieve stability and put an end to political division in Libya, according to a statement issued by the Libyan Interior Ministry.
