Libyan Foreign Minister hails AU efforts for unity and integration among African peoples

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Najla al-Mangouch, Wednesday hailed "the efforts of the African Union (AU) to achieve unity among African countries, accelerate political, economic and social integration and strengthen solidarity among their peoples".

She was speaking at the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the Libyan embassy building in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, which includes, in addition to the embassy, the headquarters of the Libyan Permanent Mission to the African Union, according to a statement issued by her ministry.

The Libyan minister stressed the importance of the presence of the embassy and the Permanent Mission of Libya in Addis Ababa, which houses the headquarters of the African Union and other regional offices and centres.

Mrs. al-Mangouch expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the Libyan Embassy staff to strengthen relations between the Libyan State and the Republic of Ethiopia, and the services provided by the Embassy to the citizens.

The laying of the foundation stone of the new Libyan Embassy building coincides with the 13th anniversary of the Libyan chairmanship of the African Union General Assembly meetings on 2 February 2009.

The ceremony was attended by the Director of the Africa Department at the ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fateh Bachina, the Chargé d'Affaires at the Libyan Embassy in Addis Ababa, Alaa al-Tagouri, and members of the Libyan delegation participating in the meetings of the 40th session of the African Union Executive Council.

Libya is one of the founding countries of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), having hosted the first session of the General Assembly of the African Union (AU) in July 2002.
