Libyan FM reaffirms country’s interest in African migrants despite Covid-19

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The Libyan minister of foreign affairs of the Government of National Accord, Mohamed Siala, on Wednesday said that "the Libyan government pays utmost attention to the African brothers who are on its territory despite the difficult challenges linked to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic".

In his speech at the 38th ordinary session of the African Union Executive Council, to be held virtually on 3-4 February, under the presidency of the South African minister of foreign affairs, Naledi Pandor, Mr Siala said that "the fundamental solution to the problem of illegal immigration is in the establishment of development projects in the countries of origin of the migrants -- decent job opportunities to African youths and limited desire to go to Europe to improve their economic situation".

Siala underlined that the four summits with partners were not finally held because of the conditions linked to the coronavirus pandemic over the past year.

Siala suggested that the African Union Commission chairman, in consultation with the current chairman of the African Union and concerned partners, should agree on the appropriate dates to hold the summit this year, that is to say the Afro-Arab, Africa-Europe, Indian-African and Turkish-African summits.

In addition, he underlined the need to take into consideration the decisions, regulations and laws set by the African Union concerning the right over a fair and equitable sharing of jobs within the AU organs, and by taking into consideration the least represented countries.

During his speech, Siala reviewed the report of the Committee of permanent delegates during the meeting of the Executive Authority that discussed several points during its session, in addition to the election of six new Commissioners at the African Union Commission and the examination of the reports of ministerial committees.
