Libyan FM reaffirms Libya’s support for unified African position to get continent permanent seat at UNSC

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan minister of foreign affairs of the Government of National Accord, Mohamed Taher Siala, Tuesday underlined "the importance of the active participation of Africa in regional and international events through the reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC)".

Siala thus reaffirmed "Libya’s firm position in support for the unified African position, which confirms that Africa must have a permanent representation at the UN Security Council, in accordance with the Ezulwini consensus and the Sirte Declaration".

This position was unveiled during Siala’s participation in the ministerial meeting of the African Union (AU) Committee of Ten on the reform of the Security Council.

The meeting was held virtually under the presidency of the minister of foreign affairs of Sierra Leone, Nabeela Tunis, with the participation of the member-states of the committee, a statement issued on the website of the ministry of foreign affairs said.

The chief of the Libyan diplomacy underlined that "whoever is competent to represent Africa at the Security Council as permanent member of the UN Secretary-General depends on the fundamental competence of the African Union, while rejecting any fragmentary solution".

The meeting examined the recommendations of the African Union Summit in February 2020 concerning the activities of the committee, in addition to discussing ways and means to maintain the impulse of the African position in the governmental negotiations, said the same sources.

The Libyan minister of foreign affairs indicated that this meeting was held in extremely difficult circumstances because of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its disastrous consequences on regional and international efforts to follow up on important affairs.

It is worth noting that the Committee of Ten was set up in 2005 and included 10 African countries, with the mission to strengthen and support the unified African position in ongoing governmental negotiations on the reform of the UN system.
