Libyan FM calls for end of divisions

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The Libyan minister of foreign affairs of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Mohamed Siala, has said that the solution to Libya's crisis is "to end political divisions" and prioritise the convening of the national inclusive conference as proposed in the Action Plan of UN envoy in Libya, Ghassan Salamé.

The solution will also come through parliamentary and presidential elections based on a constitution, Libyan newspapers on Friday quoted Mr Siala as saying at the 151st conference of Arab foreign affairs ministers in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The political process in Libya seems to have been relaunched since the recent meeting between the chairman of the Presidential Council of GNA, Fayez al-Sarraj, and the head of the Libya National Army, Marshall Khalifa Haftar, in Dubai (UAE), under the aegis of Salamé.

The two main stakeholders agreed at the conference to reduce the transition period through the holding of general elections before late this year and unify the country’s institutions.

These three points summarise the Action Plan of Mr Salame to resolve the Libyan crisis.

In his speech in Cairo, the Libyan Foreign Minister said that the Presidential Council had continued to deal positively with the initiatives aimed at finding solutions and narrow the viewpoints of Libyan parties.

A tripartite meeting bringing together the ministers of Foreign Affairs from the three Libya's neighbouring countries - Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia - held in line with the 151st Ministerial Council of the Arab League, had pledged the preservation of Libya’s unity, sovereignty and independence, and called for support for the action plan of the UN envoy.

Mr Siala announced Libya’s "total conviction" of the importance of the role played by the League of Arab States and its organs in the settlement of the political crisis.

Encouraged by the Dubai meeting between the two main protagonists, Salamé is carrying on with consultations with various parties for the national inclusive conference meant to bring the Libyans to find consensus on the electoral agenda, which includes parliamentary election, a constitutional referendum and presidential election.
