Libyan Director preaches peace ahead of Gambian polls

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Basheer Nafia Abouazzoum, the Director of Libya-based International NGO, World Islamic Call Society (WICS), Wednesday urged Gambians to put peace and national unity first before other considerations ahead of their December presidential polls.

The new WICS Director, who recently arrived in Gambia to start his assignment, made the clarion call during an exclusive interview held at his office in Kotu, Serre Kunda.

"Gambians are excellent peace-loving people and my advice to them is for them to keep united in keeping peace at all times. This is a gift from Allah," he said.

"Peace is very important. Without peace, nothing is achieved. Without it, you cannot even sleep," he stressed, adding: "With peace, there is stability and progress.

"I send my best regards to the Gambian people and the president and hope that Allah will keep them united for peace," he emphasized .

Turning his attention to the international level, Basheer said WICS had  been active in contributing towards ensuring global peace.

He said his organization also engaged on interfaith dialogue with other religious organizations like the Vatican.

He said the Islamic teachings and philosophy they believed in was based on the culture of peace and tolerance and had nothing to do with violence and extremism.

"We believe that every human being should live in peace. That all human beings have a right to live in peace," he reiterated.
