Libya wants to increase gas production

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya wants to develop onshore and offshore gas fields to increase production and fill the natural gas supply gap to consumers, Oil and Gas Minister Mohamed Aoun announced on Monday.

He was speaking during a virtual meeting on natural gas policies in Africa organised by the African Union (AU) Energy Commission, in which oil, gas and energy companies and ministers from African countries took part.

According to Mr. Aoun, the Libyan oil and gas sector seeks to develop the capacity of the natural gas transport network to meet the needs of local natural gas consumption in all regions of Libya, including power plants, to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and also for export.

The minister stressed Libya's commitment to preserve the environment and climate, ae well as willingness to adopt the "zero gas flaring" policy to reduce gas flaring in an effort to reach zero stage, focusing on the implementation of environmental measures and remediation programmes.

He called for an action plan to harness natural gas in power generation for African countries whose populations lack electricity but they are exporting gas.

Libya has large natural gas deposits with 1,600 billion cubic metres, ranking it fifth in Africa.
