Libya's Interior Ministry 'ready to secure' 2019 municipal elections

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord has expressed its readiness to secure and protect the municipal council elections that will begin on 30 March in several cities, the second since the revolution of 17 February 2011.

The cities of Ghadames, Bint Bia, Al-Hawamed, Al-Rayania, Al-Jabal, Zouara, Nalout and Al-Kalaa will hold elections from 30 March.

In a statement issued by its press office on Facebook, the ministry said that the municipalities that will hold elections on 6 April are Oubari, Khomes, Zliten, Regdaline, Al-Haraba, Wazen and Al-Ghrifa.

On 13 April, the municipalities of Barak Al-Chatti, Adri Al-Chatti, Msalla, Sabratha, Sorman, Kilka, Al-Rajban, Al-Rahibat, Al-Nassim, Nesma, Al-Qarda Al-Chatti, Al-Bawanis and Al-Choueirif and Ouest Zaouia will organise their elections.

The Ministry has instructed the General Directorate of Security Operations to ensure the security of elections.

The regional security directorates should also develop security plans with the participation of branches of other security bodies within their geographical perimeter for the security of polling stations and electoral districts, in cooperation with the Ministry of Local Government and in coordination with the Central Committee to ensure that municipal council elections are held.

The Interior Ministry of the Government of National Reconciliation has given the assurance that all its security services will "oppose all those who seek to disrupt this important electoral event".
