Libya's eastern-based govt establishes committee to monitor conditions of detainees and prisons

Benghazi, Libya (PANA) - The Council of Ministers of Libya's eastern-based government is to establish a temporary committee to monitor the conditions of detainees and prison facilities.

Reporting directly to the Council of Ministers, the committee will be responsible for overseeing detention facilities and correctional centers throughout the country.

According to a publication on Thursday by the Libyan government, the decree aims to examine the conditions of detention of prisoners and detainees, to verify the legality of procedures, to ensure that no detention takes place outside the judicial framework, and to monitor the execution of court decisions and release orders issued by the competent authorities.

The Committee is also responsible for identifying any failures or violations and submitting periodic reports to the Council of Ministers, including its findings and necessary recommendations.

It will ensure the application of relevant national and international human rights standards within correctional and rehabilitation facilities.

This decision is part of strengthening the rule of law, protecting rights and freedoms and consolidating the principles of justice, thus contributing to the development of the judicial system and the reform of the country.

Under this decision, the Prime Minister of the eastern-based government, Osama Hammad, appointed former National Security Adviser Ibrahim Buchnaf as chairman of the committee.

Its members are Haitham Muftah Obeid, Jaziyah Jibril Chaiter, Latifa Ali Al-Fakih, a representative from the Attorney General's Office, a representative from the Military Prosecutor's Office, a representative from the Judicial Police, a representative from the Military Police and Prison Administration, and Saad Al-Magsabi as secretary of the committee.
