Libya's PM al-Dbaiba announces activation of law on families of martyrs, missing persons

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid al-Dbaiba, announced on Tuesday the activation of the law on the treatment of the families of martyrs and missing persons, which recognises their sacrifices and grants them privileges in recognition of the acts of their family members.

In an address at a fast-breaking dinner he held in the capital, Tripoli, in honour of the families of the martyrs and the missing, confirming the government's support for their rights, Mr. al-Dbaiba pledged to allocate a quota to the families of the martyrs and the missing as part of Libya's quota in the upcoming pilgrimage to Mecca.

He stressed that the government will always seek to keep this important category in its concerns.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Press Office, the Association of Families of Martyrs "Al-Bounyan Al-Marsous", a military operation that defeated the Islamic State Organisation (Daech) in central Sirte in 2016, awarded Mr. al-Dbaiba an honorary shield for his response to the payment of salary arrears for a while.

The law in favour of the families of martyrs and missing persons covers the period between 15 February to 23 October 2011, with the exception of those who were injured during this period and died of their injuries in a later period.

According to the decision of the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, anyone who was martyred or disappeared in the fighting to complete the liberation after the date of 23 October 2011 may be considered subject to the provisions of this law.

The 17 February 2011 revolution overthrew the regime of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi after 8 months of armed conflict.

Following the fall of the regime, and with it the collapse of the state structures and security and military organs, Libya has experienced instability and security chaos that has continued to this day with the omnipresence of armed formations that control the field.
