Libya reiterates commitment to Africa

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Manfi, has stated that despite the circumstances that have threatened his country's security, stability and territorial and national unity, it has maintained its commitment to its African brothers.

He said Libya continues to favour the constructive role of the African Union (AU) in helping the country emerge from its current situation and return to normality through comprehensive national reconciliation and inclusive general elections.

This objective must include accelerating the unification of institutions, the withdrawal of combatants, mercenaries and foreign forces, and an end to negative and obstructive foreign interventions in the country.

In a speech delivered at the seventh biannual coordination meeting between the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities and Mechanisms (RECs), held on Sunday in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, Mr Al-Manfi stressed that the AU and the RECs had a key role to play.

He stressed that the role of the AU in supporting Libya within international bodies has become central and essential, with the support of the Presidential Council and the Libyan people as a whole. “We have witnessed this through the broad and effective popular participation in the measures we have taken to strengthen confidence among the Libyan people.”

He praised Africa's support and assistance, illustrated by the active participation of Angola and the Republic of Congo in the recent meeting of the Berlin Process, and by the collective and unified position of the African Group and the Republic of Guyana during the Security Council's deliberations on Libya.

“Within the Presidential Council of Libyan, we aspire and work towards better consultation and coordination,” stressed the Libyan official, welcoming the decision taken by the African Union Peace and Security Council to convene a meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the Council's member states on 24 July.

“I gratefully accepted this invitation and expressed my pleasure at accepting it and contributing to its discussions,” he said, adding that despite everything that has been said and continues to be said about the challenges facing my country, Libya remains a promising, united and hospitable country, thanks to the authenticity of its people, the cohesion of its social fabric and the unity of the majority of its citizens, their attachment to their homeland, their commitment to its unity and prosperity, and their dedication to a spirit of peace, unity and initiative whenever they sense a danger or threat".

The Libyan leader urged his African counterparts to work together in a spirit of solidarity and partnership to achieve Agenda 2063, inviting them to use the summit as an opportunity to renew their commitment to building a strong, united and prosperous Africa.

The seventh biannual coordination meeting between the AU RECs examined the evolution of the integration process in Africa and regional integration.

The progress report on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the division of labour between the Member States and the African regional economic areas were also discussed.
