Libya crisis one of the main topics of the upcoming Arab Summit, according to an Arab League Emissary

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Arab League's envoy to Libya, Salaheddine Jamali, said that the Arab Summit, to be held in Tunis on 31 March, will address a number of Arab issues, including the Libyan issue, the al-Wassat newspaper reported on Saturday. According to thr paper, Mr. Jamali said that the Libyan issue will be strongly present at the Arab leaders summit, stressing that preparations have been made for the Arab Summit, particularly after the meeting of the Chairman of the Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, and the Commander in Chief of the Libyan National Army, Marshal Khalifa Hafter, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The meeting in late February between Mr. al-Sarraj and Marshal Khalifa Haftar in Dubai, under the auspices of the United Nations Envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salamme, made it possible to relaunch the political proces, deadlocked by the differences between the Libyan protagonists.< The two men agreed to shorten the transition, hold general elections and unite Libyan state institutions. The Arab League Envoy to Libya, Salaheddine Jamali, said that the meeting between al-Sarraj and Haftar had a significant impact on the coming period, even if it did not result in any agreement, stressing that the simple meeting is an agreement in itself. Jamali added that UN Secretary-General An;onio Guterres, who has already confirmed his presence, had been invited, as had the Chairman of the African Union. Regarding media reports of a roadmap prepared by African leaders on the resolution of the Libya crisis and national reconciliation, Mr. Jamali said: "We know nothing about it, except through the press, but the Arab League is satisfied with the UN initiative because the multiplication of initiatives disperses efforts. A joint African Union and United Nations delegation recently visited Libya for two days where it met with the main protagonists in Libya, urging them to make more concessions to reach a political solution to the political and security crisis in the country. At the end of their 32nd Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last February, African leaders developed a roadmap for greater coordination with the United Nations and defined a roadmap including a Libyan-Libyan Reconciliation Conference and general elections. Efforts are currently being made by the UN Emissary, Ghassan Salame, to hold the National Inclusive Conference in a month's time and to build consensus among Libyans on a timetable for the electoral agenda. -0-PANA BY/JSG/MTA/VAO 16March2019
