Libya, US activate security cooperation

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The deputy minister of Interior of the Libyan Government of National Accord, Colonel Khaled Mazen, on Monday held talks with members of the committee in charge of activating the cooperation in terms of security with the United States.

In a communiqué, the ministry of Interior said on its Facebook page that the meeting discussed and identified the technical and consultative needs and the integration of those needs into a group of conclusions and recommendations that will be presented to the American party.

A meeting was held on 19 March this month on the naval base of Tripoli that brought together General Thomas Waldhauser, chief of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), the chargé d'affaires of the US embassy in Libya, Peter Wiliams Body, and the Libyan ministers of Interior Fathi Bashagha, Transport, Milad Maatoug and Finance, Fraj Boumtari and the chief of the investigation office of the public prosecutor, Seddik al-Sour.

The Interior ministry said that the meeting enabled them to share viewpoints on a number of issues concerning the Libyan problem, in addition to the latest developments in the Libyan dossier.

In a communiqué issued by the US embassy in Libya, the US reaffirmed that they are committed to provide support to the ministry of Interior for US$500,000 as assistance to acquire non-lethal weapons in a bid to support the strong efforts made by the ministry to strengthen the capacities of the Tripoli Security Department.

This new assistance comes as complement to the US$30 million in security aid to support the priorities set by the government of national accord.
