Libya, Tunisia agree to facilitate interstate movement of people and goods

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya and Tunisia have agreed to address outstanding issues including the movement of travellers at common border posts, deciding, in this regard, on the need to take measures and arrangements to facilitate passage of citizens and goods back and forth in a way that does not violate the laws in force in either country.

This agreement was reached between Libyan Deputy Minister of the Interior in charge of the Affairs of the Directorates, Col.-Maj. Bechir Al-Amin and the delegation which accompanied him on Tuesday in Tunis, and the director general of the Tunisian National Security, said a statement released by the information office of the ministry.

"They have agreed to take appropriate measures to resolve some of the existing problems between the two parties in a manner that serves the common interests between the two brother countries," the statement added.

Among these existing issues that were raised at the meeting, was the issue of "similarity of names" for wanted persons, according to the same source.

In this regard, the Tunisian side has declared itself ready to discuss this issue with the Libya in order to consolidate the elements of integrated security cooperation between the two interior ministries.

Regarding the issue of speeding up the procedures for the passage of trucks loaded with goods, the two parties stressed the need to speed up these procedures without interruption, with the possibility of allowing critically ill patients who do not have passports to travel under procedures that will facilitate this issue.

As for the stay of Libyan citizens in Tunisia, the Tunisian side reported on the measures taken by the competent security authorities to reduce the time taken to obtain residence cards, in addition to the automatic renewal of these cards.

At the end of the meeting, the Tunisian side declared itself ready to expand the existing cooperation in a way that embodies the fraternal relations between the two countries and in a way that contributes to strengthening security integration.

The work of this committee resulted in the signing of the minutes of a security meeting initialed for the Libyan Ministry of the Interior, by Col.-Maj. Bechir Al-Amin, Deputy Minister of the Interior, and for the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior, by Jamal Ben Slama, Director of the General Department of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation.

The visit of the Tunisian head of government on April 22 to Libya helped seal the resumption of cooperation and trade, as well as the movement of people in both directions.

The common land border posts of Ras Jedir and Wazen / Dhehiba, constitute a real lung of trade with the crossing of tens of trucks and cars transporting goods daily, as well as thousands of citizens of the two countries.
