Libya: Trial of ex-Khadafi regime officials adjourned to 25 May

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The trial of the 37 dignitaries of the defunct Khadafi regime has been adjourned to 25 May at the request of the defence lawyers, PANA reported Sunday.

The trial was postponed to enable the defence lawyers access details of the allegations against the accused, said the investigation chief at the office of Public Prosecutor, Seddick al-Sour.

The trial of some former officials, as well as Khadafi's son Seif al-Islam, reopened earlier Sunday at the trial court here.

The officials are being tried for the crimes they allegedly committed while trying to suppress the 2011 revolution in the North African nation.

They include Khadafi regime's last Prime Minister Baghdadi Mahmoudi, his former Intelligent Service Chief Abdallah al-Senoussi, and his last Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelati Labidi.

The officials were formally indicted on 24 October last year.

Judicial sources said that Seif al-Islam, who is being detained in the South-west city of Zenten, is being tried by video-conference for security reasons - just like several other officials of his father’s regime in the Eastern city of Misrata.

After dispensing with preliminary issues, analysts said the stage is now set for the court to kick-start the real trial of the former regime officials.

They are accused of engaging in assassinations, incitement to crime, formation of armed gangs to foment trouble, the use of immigration to put pressure on European countries and the recruitment of mercenaries are among the accusations made against the former officials.
