Libya, Malta to set up committees to promote security cooperation

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan minister of Interior, Khaled Mazen, Monday agreed with his Maltese counterpart, Byron Camillieri, to find efficient mechanisms to guarantee security cooperation between the two countries, an official source told PANA here

The agreement was concluded during a meeting between Mazen and Camillieri, who arrived here at the head of a high-level delegation from La Valette sent by the Maltese Prime Minister, George Abela, a statement issued by the Libyan ministry of Interior said.

The same sources said that the meeting between Mazen and Camillieri enabled them to review a certain number of deals concluded between the ministries of Interior of the two countries in different domains, including security.

These are based on the historic ties between the two countries, particularly relations between the Libyan government and Malta, he said, noting that the two parties "underlined the importance to activate them so as to serve the common interests of the two countries".

The Libyan Interior minister, Mazen, underlined a certain number of important issues, adding that "they should be examined to find the common mechanisms to promote that cooperation".

Topmost among these were the "fight against terrorism, money laundering, illegal immigration, the sharing of security information between the competent agencies of the two countries, in addition to a specialized training on the basis of the needs of the Interior ministry".

Mazen underlined the importance of the active role played by Malta within the European Union, stressing the importance to use that role to orientate the European support in accordance with the priorities set by the Libyan party.
