Libya: GNU rejects parliamentary votes of confidence for alternate govt

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The national unity government announced on Tuesday evening its rejection of the vote of confidence granted by the House of Representatives (Parliament) to the new government, led by Prime Minister Fathi Bachagha, accusing the Parliament leadership of "perpetuating fraud" while pledging to continue its work.

In a statement, the government of national unity said that what happened on Tuesday in the parliamentary session confirms the continuation of the parliamentary leadership in "using fraud, adopting decisions on behalf of the House of Representatives in a truncated manner".

The statement added: "Libyans followed the falsification of the count, which was clear with the peremptory evidence on the screen," noting that the count did not reach the quorum set by the Council to gain confidence.

The statement highlighted the statements of a number of MPs, noting that although they were not in Tobruk, they were counted among those present.

The government of national unity stressed that "the process of fraud began since the presidency of parliament voted to withdraw confidence in the Unity government through the same mechanism, and the appointment of a prime minister without a quorum.

The statement reiterated that all these measures were taken in violation of the Political Agreement, which stipulates clear mechanisms in the procedures of the constitutional amendment and the formation of the executive authority, which were "unilateral measures that could take the country back to the stage of division".

The incumbent government stressed that it will continue its work, promising to focus on completing the elections on time during June.

It should be noted that the Libyan Prime Minister has proposed a plan to hold parliamentary elections and a referendum on the draft constitution on 24 June, in accordance with the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

"The House of Representatives, which is supposed to uphold the law, continues through its presidency to be part of the problem instead of a solution, and continues to be the biggest violator of the constitutional rules, and the cause of all the misery Libyans are experiencing today," the government added in its statement.

The government of national unity warned against any disorder or anyone considering any attempt to infiltrate its headquarters, to carry out an attack against the seat of government, assuring that it will deal with such movements, according to the law.
