Liberia election: Opposition leader Boakai maintains slight lead with nearly 88% of votes declared

Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) - Opposition leader Joseph Boakai is maintaining a slender lead over President George Weah in Liberia's 14 November runoff presidential election with 87.71% of votes declared by National Elections Commission (NEC).

In results from 5,107 out of 5,890 poling stations released on Thursday, Mr. Boakai has 50.58% of the votes while President Weah has 49.42%.

In the first round of voting on 10 October, President Weah, 57, had 43.83% of the vote, against 43.44% scored by Mr. Boakai, 78.

In the 2017 runoff between the two men, Weah garnered 61% of the votes to defeat Boakai, who served as vice-president from 2006-2017 to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Laureate and Africa’s first elected female Head of State.
