Latest developments in Libya worry Tunisians

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The military escalation threatening the political-security situation in Libya, especially in the western part, is a source of worry to neighbouring Tunisia, according to observers in Tunis who fear a new conflagration and a long open war.

Observers believe the consequences of the latest developments on the ground could further prevent a political solution that has been blocked for several years.

These developments, they believe, could allow some of the belligerents to impose themselves and eradicate armed militias, guided by ‘political Islam’ itself supported from the outside.

Tunisian Libyan specialist Ghazi Maali believes that the loser of both sides, between Marshal Khalifa Haftar, a strong man from the Libyan East, and Fayez Sarraj, the Chairman of the Presidential Council, supported by the international community, has no other recourse than to flee towards Tunisia.

He said the flight of the loser would lead to the presence in Tunisia of thousands of fighters and displaced populations driven out by the fighting.

He also noted the return of Tunisian workers and the arrival of foreigners from Libya, which would require health and food aid interventions.

Tunisian Interior Minister Hecham Fourati has, in this regard, given assurance that all necessary measures had been taken, in coordination with army units, to prepare for any eventuality related to the deterioration of the situation in Libya.

He told local radio on Saturday that the events in Libya were closely monitored, recalling in this regard, the Friday meeting of the National Security Council chaired by the Tunisian Head of State, Béji Caïd Essebsi, who affirmed the need to put in place a security plan to prevent any eventuality.
