Kagame to witness final peace deal agreement between Mozambican gov't and Renamo

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwandan President Paul Kagame, on Tuesday arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, for the signing ceremony of the country's Peace and Reconciliation Agreement between the Government of Mozambique and Renamo, the main opposition party, an official source confirmed to PANA in Kigali.

According to the source, the agreement will be signed at Praça da Paz, in Maputo, at 16:00 local time.

Last Thursday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) Ossufo Momade signed an agreement to end hostilities in Gorongosa, central Sofala province, to formally end clashes between government forces and the armed wing of the main opposition party.

It said that this is the third agreement between the Government of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Renamo, following the signing of the 1992 Rome General Peace Agreement and the cessation of military hostilities in 2014 following a new wave of confrontation between the two parties.

In a related development, the leader of the Renamo armed arm contesting the party leadership refused to hand in his arms under the hostility cessation agreement signed with the government without a new political formation president being elected.

“We will elect our president and only then will we hand over the weapons,” Mariano Nhongo, Renamo general, was quoted as saying in a statement issued earlier this week.
