Jeddah Summit Declaration: Libyan PM welcomes countries' stance on stability in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libyan Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Mr. Abdelhamid Al-Dbaiba, has welcomed the final declaration of the Jeddah Security and Development Summit, in which the leaders renewed their call for unifying military institutions under UN supervision.

They also called for the necessity of holding parliamentary and presidential elections and reiterated support for the departure of mercenaries from Libya.

Leaders of six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates – plus Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq held the talks on regional security and bilateral relations with the US at the summit.

The Summit was at the invitation of the Saudi Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and US President Joseph Biden.

In a tweet posted on Saturday, Mr. al-Dbaiba wrote: "We appreciate the statement issued by the Jeddah Security and Development Summit, which stressed the need for all mercenaries to leave Libya and the priority of holding elections. Every day the international position becomes clearer in rejecting the existence of a new transition phase.

"We welcome the role of the United States and all friendly countries for their firm position in favour of stability in our country."

The final declaration stressed the need for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections to be held as soon as possible and for all foreign fighters and mercenaries to leave without delay.

The leaders participating in the summit, which ended on Saturday,  "affirmed their support for the Libyan people as they engage in the UN-brokered political process to prepare for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

"They expressed their full support for the Libyan ceasefire agreement concluded on October 23, 2020 and the Libyan call for the complete departure of foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries without further delay, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2570 (2021)."

They welcomed Egypt's hosting of the Libyan constitutional dialogue in a way that supports the UN-backed political process.
